Examination - Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I register for the written examination?
A. You must complete the license application packet before applying for the written examination. Then submit the written examination form to the bureau with the appropriate fees. You must pass the written examination before you are eligible to take the practical examination.
Q. When is the written examination given?
A. The written exam is offered continuously in various locations throughout the state. Once you have qualified for the written exam, you will receive information in the mail from the testing firm regarding how to schedule your exam.
Q. How do I register for the practical examination?
A. You must pass the written examination before you are eligible to take the practical examination. The practical examination application will be given to you at the written examination site, if you receive a passing score. The practical examination application contains filing dates and locations of the upcoming practical examinations.
The practical examination is given three to four times per year, in either Sacramento or San Diego. You must apply within the specific filing period for the practical examination. All practical examinations are limited to the first 50 applicants.
Q. What is the process for requesting a reasonable accommodation for taking either the written or practical examination?
A. You must provide written documentation supporting any request for accommodation. Please contact the bureau for further information.
Q. How long does it take to receive my test results?
A. When you complete your written test, you will be given your exam results before leaving the testing site. The practical examination results are mailed 4-6 weeks after the examination.
