Licensing - Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I apply for a hearing aid dispenser license?
A. Submit the completed license application packet and fees to the address provided on the application. You must pass the written and practical examinations in order to qualify for a permanent hearing aid dispenser license.
Q. What are the educational requirements to apply for a hearing aid dispenser license?
A. You must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Q. What courses are available to become licensed?
A. Currently we are unaware of any college courses that are offered to provide training for hearing aid dispensers.
Q. How can I get the training to become a hearing aid dispenser?
A. You can apply for a trainee license (refer to option 2 of the application packet) where you can begin working and training under the supervision of a licensed hearing aid dispenser.
Q. How do I get my fingerprints processed?
A. All applicants are required to submit a live scan application for fingerprint processing. You can obtain the location to a live scan station through the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Q. How can I check if my license has been issued?
A. You may access this information by selecting verify a license. Licensing information is updated daily.
Q. I am licensed in another state. How can I become licensed in California?
A. You can apply for a temporary license (refer to option 3 of the application packet), which allows out-of-state licensees to practice for up to 1 year. It is required that out-of-state licensees take and pass both the written and practical examination.
Q. I'm applying for licensure in another state. How do I get my licensing information to that state?
A. The bureau provides official licensure certifications. You must submit your request in writing along with the $15 fee specifying what information is requested and where the bureau needs to send the certification.
Q. How long will it take to process my application?
A. Application processing times may vary. In accordance with applicable laws and regulations we have within a 189 days to process your application. Below are the current average processing times for each type of application from the time that the Bureau receives a completed application.
Initial applications: 4-6 weeks
Branch applications: 2-3 weeks
Written examination applications: 3-4 weeks
Practical examination application: 2 weeks after the final filing period.
Permanent license: 4-6 weeks
Duplicate License: 2-3 weeks
Q. How do I appeal a denial of my application for licensure? A. You have the right to an administrative hearing if you make a written request for a hearing within 60 days after service of the Notice of Denial (Section 485, Business and Professions Code).
Q. How do I change my name on my license?
A. Complete a duplicate license form and submit along with the required payment of $25.00.
Q. How do I change my address?
A. Address changes must be reported immediately and submitted in writing to the bureau office by mail, fax or via email at:

Please note: A license will not be issued for an address change. If you would like a duplicate license with your new address you must submit a duplicate license form.
Q. If I'm working in more than one location, do I need an additional license?
A. You must obtain a branch office license for any additional office you work in. Mail the branch application with the $25 fee to the bureau. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for processing.
