WHERE QUALITY AND SAFETY GO HAND-IN-HAND

Manicuring is the practice of cutting, trimming, polishing, coloring, tinting, or cleansing the nails. It includes, applying, sculpting, and removing artificial nails. In addition, manicurists massage and beautify the hands and feet.

Manicurists are licensed and regulated in California by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. The Board works to ensure that manicurists follow State law and infection control standards.

In the State of California a manicurist cannot:

  • Wax or tweeze eyebrows
  • Tint or dye eyelashes or eyebrows
  • Use razor-edged or cheese grater-type tools to remove calluses
  • Use products that contain Methyl Methacrylate monomer (MMA)

In California, manicuring services may be legally performed only by State-licensed manicurists in State-licensed salons and barbershops.

Mission of the BBC

Ensuring the health and safety of California consumers by promoting ethical standards and by enforcing the laws of the beauty and barbering industry.

For questions, comments or complaints, contact the Board.
