BAR Restarts Voluntary Vehicle Retirement Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 31, 2004

The Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR) is providing even more options to assist consumers whose vehicles fail Smog Check.

BAR is now offering Vehicle Retirement to motorists who want to voluntarily retire their high-polluting vehicle rather than repair it.

Eligible consumers whose vehicle fails its biennial (every other year) Smog Check can now voluntarily retire the vehicle and receive $500, based on available funds, through the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). Vehicles are retired at one of the states authorized dismantlers.

CAP also helps eligible consumers who wish to keep their cars by providing up to $500 worth of emissions-related repairs from the state to help them pass their biennial Smog Check inspection.

"It's part of the state's commitment to a more consumer-friendly program to reduce smog," says BAR Chief Richard Ross. "The Consumer Assistance Program is having a positive impact on reducing emissions of smog-causing pollutants."

The Consumer Assistance Program is a partnership between DCA/BAR, Smog Check stations, and consumers to reduce auto emissions and help California meet federal clean air standards. CAP makes it easier for consumers to get the worst polluters off the road through voluntary vehicle retirement and help others meet California clean air standards through Repair Assistance.

CAP information and applications are available on the Bureau of Automotive Repair Web site at www.bar.ca.gov or by calling the Department of Consumer Affairs toll-free at 1-800-952-5210.
