GRASS VALLEY, CA — The first in a series of presentations and workshops to carry the message of last week's 2006 California Cyber Safety Summit: Protecting Children Online takes place Thursday, October 26, 2006, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Nevada Union High School auditorium, 11761 Ridge Road in Grass Valley.
McGregor Scott, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, will make the presentation, entitled Protecting Children from Online Exploitation and Abuse. He will be joined by representatives from the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force, and local law enforcement.
"I am thrilled that the momentum of Governor Schwarzenegger's Cyber Safety Summit is taking hold through our partners in the California Coalition for Children's Internet Safety," said Charlene Zettel, director of the Department of Consumer Affairs, who facilitated last week's first-ever summit. "Thanks to last week's Summit, Coalition members now have broader access to resources and tools to protect children from the dangers lurking on the Internet."
Post-summit events to be held throughout California in the coming months will continue to target successful methods for teaching California children the safe, smart and legal way to surf the Internet.
National research has found that nearly 20-percent of youths, ages 10-17, in the United States who surf the Internet receive unwanted solicitations from predators each year, and that half of the children who are solicited do not tell anyone.
This week's presentation, sponsored by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office, is part of a joint effort by the U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice's Project Safe Childhood initiative.
