Scams, Schemes, Breaches Unmasked at California's ID Theft Summit

Registration Still Open for Free Summit on California's Hottest Privacy Issues

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — There is still time to register for the Schwarzenegger Administration's third annual Identity Theft Summit, to be held at the South San Francisco Conference Center, 255 South Airport Blvd., South San Francisco, CA 94080, on Wednesday April 11, 2007, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Identity theft continues to be the top crime concern in California and across the nation. Protecting Privacy Online: A California Identity Theft Summit will bring national experts to California to share experiences and new information that focuses on Internet-related crimes associated with this international low-tech, high-reward crime.

The summit is ideal for everyone, including consumers, parents, businesses, government, higher education, law enforcement and prosecutors, notaries and attorneys. Two panels will address Identity in Cyberspace and Public Records vs. Individual Privacy, and nine workshops will be held throughout the day, including:

• Protecting children online (Larry Magid, Safekids.com);
• Protecting your computer from hackers (Ron Gabrielson, Geek Squad);
• Online scams (Michelle Jun, Consumers Union and Scott Shipman, eBay);
• Responding to privacy breaches (Joanne McNabb, California Office of Privacy Protection and Lisa Sotto, Hunton & Williams); and
• Corporations that are the most trusted in the online marketplace (Larry Ponemon, Ponemon Institute and Fran Maier, TRUSTe).
