Frequently Asked Questions

What is the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC)?

CSAC regulates amateur and professional boxing, kickboxing and MMA throughout the state by licensing all participants and supervising the events.

Why are these CSAC Combat Sports License Plates being sold?

Proceeds from the plate sales will boost the value of a fighter’s overall retirement benefit payout. There are two funds: the Boxer’s Pension Plan (Plan), and the MMA Retirement Benefit Fund (Benefit). The Plan’s value averages around $4 million, and the Benefit is slowly accumulating funds. Both are primarily supported by ticket sales. The plate sales are anticipated to increase the value of both and, in turn, the amount a fighter receives once eligible.

Who benefits from the proceeds from license plate sales?

The funds from license plate sales will go towards the CSAC-managed retirement funds for qualifying MMA fighters and professional boxers. For information on eligibility, visit the CSAC website.

How can fight fans help future claimants?

Spread the word by telling fellow fight fans, friends, family, and co-workers about the plate and its mission to support fighters once their career is complete. Let fight fans that live, work, and enjoy combat sports in California know how they can support. Be sure to use the hashtag #CAFighterPlate whenever you can!

How does the order process work?

Anyone who has a current California-registered vehicle including automobile, truck, trailer, motorcycle, or commercial vehicle can reserve the Combat Sports License Plate by visiting CAFighterPlate.dca.ca.gov.

Are the fees paid for the license plate tax deductible?

A portion of the Combat Sports License Plate purchase price and renewal fee is considered a charitable contribution and is tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. For questions about taxes, consult a tax professional.

If I already own a personalized plate, can I keep it?

If your personalized plates have 6 characters or less, you can keep your configuration. The addition of the ring and gloves on the left side of the plate takes the place of the seventh character. Because of this, the maximum number of characters allowed on the plate is six. Your registration fees will include the cost of the personalization (your six chosen letters and/or numbers) plus the cost of the license plate.

If I have a different specialized license plate – can I switch?

Yes. Converting from another specialized license plate will cost the same as setting up a new CSAC Combat Sports License Plate.

How long will it take to get the plates?

After receiving at least 7,500 paid orders within the next 12 months, CSAC will immediately submit them to the DMV. The DMV will then produce and distribute the Combat Sports License Plate. The DMV production process will take at least 10-12 months, and longer for personalized license plates.

Can I gift a CSAC Combat Sports License Plate?

Yes. On the license plate order website, complete the web form and fill it out on behalf of the gift recipient. The person receiving the gift must have a current California registration for the vehicle they plan to place the plates onto.

What will you do with the information I provide on the online order form?

CSAC will not share your information outside of providing your information to the DMV to process the plate order, or send unsolicited emails/mailings, or make unsolicited phone calls. Your information will only be used to contact you regarding your CSAC Combat Sports License Plate order.

What if I move or change vehicles before I receive my Combat Sports License Plate?

You can update your order information by visiting the Commission’s contact us webpage.
